Dear Friends,
It has been a rather quiet week in Klamath Falls as we slowly pass summer and await the fall equinox this coming week. As the trees show their red and yellow leaves, we must say goodbye to the warmer weather and embrace the change. We have been a part of the wonderful pantry garden and have had the pleasure of watching it grow and produce this summer. There have been signs of growth as the rain has come into our area this week. There are signs of growth here at Klamath Falls Friends Church too, areas of green here and there. If you have attended in the past, please come again and help us to grow and to be a stronger Quaker presence in Klamath County.
Tomorrow marks one of the signs of growth, as what seems mundane is typically a joyful event. We are blessed to have newcomers who are active and have made themselves a part of the congregational life. Little things like cleaning the church sound so boring or exhausting, but the older members and the newcomers come together for an hour of fellowship and fun. It is a wonderful time of community building. We appreciate those who cleaned the church last month: Bernie, Jeff, Wendy, Sue and me. Laughter and camaraderie were throughout the church as we focused together on doing these two things together well: building community and cleaning the church. Tomorrow at 9 AM we are gathering again to clean the church for September. We appreciate those who have committed to being here, but you can come even if you haven’t signed up too. Your coworkers are going to be Sue, Amy, Tony and Joe. It takes less than an hour, and it is a good way to get your blood moving in your body on a Saturday morning.
It is an added bonus when we see each other in town. I will probably see a few of you this weekend at the Linkville Playhouse on north Main. Our little town is blessed with unusually good talent and creativity, and a great director in our own Rich Hoffman. The players will be presenting the time honored story that is taken from the diary of a young girl who succumb to the horrors of occupation and prison camp during the reign of the Nazis during World War II. This will be a special production of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” and is at the Linkville from now until Sept. 26. Performances are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee on Sept. 20. Tickets can be purchased at Poppy’s. I hope to see you there.
Quakers were actively involved in helping those affected by the German occupation and the World War. They formed a “kinderport” created by the Germany Emergency Committee of the Religious Society of Friends who helped to evacuate 10,000 Jewish children from Nazi-held territories to Britain. Similar work in France was done by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), both feeding the camps with soup kitchens and hiding children in southern France. AFSC protested the forced internment of Japanese Americans here in America and helped the internment victims to get into college and find jobs once the camps closed. For these and other works of peace during WWII, American Friends Service Committee and Britain’s Friends Service Council shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947.
Help us as we continue to support and do the work of peace and transformation here in Klamath Falls. This Sunday (on zoom) and next Sunday (in-person) we will be meeting with a coalition of individuals and groups, CAC, who are working for change in the Klamath region. Those two meetings will both be at 2:00. Singing Resistance now starts at 4:00 PM every Sunday here at the Friends Church. We had been meeting at 2:00, but it works out better if we move the time to later in the afternoon. The songs are the protest songs sung in Minnesota during the control of ICE in the winter. We will be learning new songs and relearning older songs that we will be singing at the protest rally planned for Saturday September 26 from 1:30-3:00 at the corner of 6th and Washburn. Come join us as we make a difference in our community.
Below’s announcements for the church go through the month of October. Please put things that interest you on your calendar. We would like to enjoy your participation. You will see that the food pantry has closed for this week. This closing is because of bats in the church that houses the pantry (Klamath Lutheran). We hope the pantry will be open by September 29. People will be needing our services this week and next, so holding this situation in the Light as the church does testing and sanitizing of the building before we open is requested. Stay tuned here if you are scheduled to volunteer on the 29th. If you are down to volunteer for the 22nd please do not show up to volunteer.
