Friday with Friends

Dear Friends,

As I wrote to you about last week, we have been going through transitions and transformations as a church.  We welcome our new attendees and want to also thank those who have been with us for decades and all in between. In our own way, we are simply living out the time-honored mission statement of this church: We are Christ-Centered Friends who equip and encourage all people to respond to God’s love and transforming Spirit.  This has indeed been the transforming power of Spirit. As new people come in or visitors come to experience a Quaker church, we want them to feel at ease and informed about the purpose of silent worship in the meeting during the unprogrammed portion.

There is a laminated sheet that explained open/waiting worship for decades, but its wording no longer reflected accurately the views of all attendees of the meeting and those we are encouraging to be a part of our community. The purpose of the laminated sheet is to help our attendees and new people to understand unprogrammed worship: what it is about, how to help it become more meaningful, and when to speak from the silence. This week I have attached a new rendition of the laminated sheet.  Many things remained the same or used the same format as before.  This has been a project of Ministry and Care since January of this year.  Much prayer, thought, and wrestling with words has been accomplished, and this is the document we discerned as a possible final version after Ministry and Care brought the proposed sheet to the business meeting on May 31, 2026 for feedback.  This is our last step before bringing it before the church to accept as an updated version. Please let us know if you are in consensus with us on this new wording or if there are changes that more accurately fit what you feel and believe about Waiting Worship for you.  Thank you for your time and energy that it takes to read this document.

This Sunday is Father’s Day, and we will commemorate it here at the church.  We hope to see you here.  Please join us.

Bring kid-friendly foods with you for the pantry (peanut butter, jelly/jam, canned spaghetti or ravioli, chunky soups, applesauce, canned fruit, breakfast bars, cereal).  Summer is the time when children need more food because they are not in school getting breakfast and lunch.  We also need hygiene products and cleaning products.  Please fill the table in the entryway with food and products for us to take to the pantry.  The pantry nights this month are June 23rd and 30th and volunteering can run between 4-7 or when you can make it.  If you want to volunteer, please contact aliciapinkerton@gmail.com

We also have a new opportunity for service at the Klamath Interfaith Food Pantry.  We have planted a vegetable garden, and we need help attending it.  Mostly we need someone to just agree to walk through and make sure the irrigation system has been turned on in the mornings and pull a weed or three when you take a walk through the garden.  We need volunteers from our church to do this regularly. If you are interested in this simple act of community, please call Margo McCullough at 541-892-2799.  I have also attached the June minutes for the pantry and a pantry newsletter that tells about last month’s statistics.

This Sunday is Peace and Social Concerns at 9:00 AM in the pastors’ office.  Please join us as we talk about the many opportunities for service for our church and in the community.

Other announcements are below including a new calendar for July.  Please update your calendars and join us as we celebrate summer.  We will be having our annual picnic in August at Moore Park.  Date TBA.

Also don’t miss the joint PRIDE event at Klamath Lutheran Church. We are working together with the UU Fellowship and KLC to put this event together.  It will be June 27 from 4-7.  There will be a place for food, dancing, outdoor games, indoor games — just an afternoon of fun and fellowship.  Definitely come if you are a member of the LGBTQ community.  If you are not a member of the LGBTQ+ community,  you also need to come as an ally as well.  A gay ally (or LGBTQ+ ally) is typically a straight and/or cisgender person who actively supports equal civil rights. Being an ally means taking action to challenge discrimination and creating a welcoming, safe environment for the gay community. If this describes you, you are very important to the LGBTQ community, and we need you to come to the gathering as well.  In addition, if you want to bring a dish, there is a sign-up list on the entryway table at the church.

Thanks to all who came to clean the church on Monday.  You did an excellent job, Bernie, Margo and Jeff!

Warmly,

Leigh Tolton
